Earlier this year, after my father passed away, a close friend shared a saying with
me: ‘You don’t do grief; grief does you.’ Although I had never heard it before, I
understood its meaning instantly — grief isn’t something we manage or complete,
but rather a process that acts upon us, evolving and reshaping us as time passes.
Perhaps no one might understand this more than Mrs Dolly Gallagher Levi, who has
long mourned her husband, Ephraim, before the curtain even rises on Hello, Dolly!
When we first meet her, she has resolved to lift herself out of her grief and, as she
puts it, “rejoin the human race.” Of course, that’s easier said than done.
Hello Dolly! was a gigantic hit from the moment it first appeared on Broadway in
1964, winning a whopping ten Tony Awards. Gene Kelly’s sumptuous film version
followed not long after, starring Barbra Streisand.
I’ve been familiar with the show for as long as I can remember — first from hearing
its joyous cast recording in my mother’s car to my grandfather’s stories of seeing
Carol Channing play it on Broadway and, years later, seeing it on stage myself. Yet,
revisiting it earlier this year, while preparing to direct, I was amazed by the courage
of a comedy that tells the story of not just one, but three widowed characters working
out how to continue with their lives. Let’s face it—grief doesn’t often set the stage for
farce!
Its message, too, is simple and profound: it’s never too late to pursue happiness. It
reminds us to live fully, using one’s energy and means to nurture joy in others,
echoing Ephraim Levi’s wise words: “Money — pardon the expression — is like
manure. It’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around encouraging young things to
grow.”
At its heart, the story is about love, second chances, and the pure delight of a life
lived in the present. May we all strive to live our lives a little more like that.
Jeremy Hurst

Sharing the stage with so many remarkably talented artists has been a humbling and unforgettable experience. He’d like to thank his family and friends for their steadfast support. Other: Shakespeare in Love (Peter) – Scarborough Players; Tick, Tick... Boom! (Counter Guy / Ensemble) – Whitby Courthouse Theatre
By day, Douglas labours among circuits and wires as an IT Engineer, keeping the lights of the modern age burning bright; by night, he treads the quiet paths of the stage, where stories rise like dawn upon distant hills. His home is one filled with the spirit of theatre, for his eldest daughter, Kaylee, serves as stage manager for Peter and the Starcatcher at Whitby Courthouse Theatre, while his wife and younger daughters lend their hands to sound and light. The younger two, eager learners of the craft, prepare a play of their own within their school’s hall.
So too does his son, Aiden, labour in the arts, serving as Assistant Stage Manager and child manager for Scarborough Players’ A Christmas Story.
Having journeyed east from Vancouver together to begin anew, the family has walked many long roads and had many adventures, yet always finds its way back to warm fires, bright laughter, and the company of kin, where stories are shared and new adventures take shape. And when the week’s work is done, they gather round the RPG table to journey once more, venturing together through worlds of their own making; for in their house it is well known that not all who wander are lost.

Valeria is a Peruvian theatre artist with a multidisciplinary background in directing, performance, and design, who has grown to love theatre in all its forms but will never forget that her teenage love of musicals (and unhealthy obsession with Glee) was what started it all. She graduated from the Drama Specialist program at the University of Toronto, where she was an executive member of UTSC’s Drama Society and the Drama Coalition, and is now trying to immerse herself in the industry. After a years-long hiatus from the musical theatre stage, she is thrilled to be part of her first SMT production, and is honoured to share the stage with such a wonderful community of talented artists. She hopes this is just the beginning of many more musical theatre adventures down the line, and that audiences have as much fun seeing Dolly as we had making it come to life!

This show is dedicated to my father, whose passion for theatre ‘lit’ the way for mine. A lifelong champion of community theatre – lighting designer, backstage crew, and true ‘techie’ at heart – he nurtured my love for the stage from the very beginning.
This one’s for you, Dad.

Healthcare administrator by day and professional amateur musician by night, Tony is thrilled to have traded the horn for a baton for this show. He serves as principal horn of the Oakville Wind Orchestra, performs with the Milton Philharmonic, and provides music direction for Gayly Forward – Toronto's queer marching band. It has been a privilege to unite 40 of the GTA’s most talented vocalists and musicians to bring this joyful score to life.
Heartfelt thanks to the cast for all the joy brought to every rehearsal; to the incredible Harmonia Gardens orchestra, whose creativity exceeded anything I could imagine; to Jeremy and David, the best creative partners I could ask for; to the production team working tirelessly behind the scenes; and to William, Alex, Miguel, and David who provided so much invaluable guidance and support on my MD journey.
Thanks also to my friends at Kensington Health for supporting my passions beyond work, and to my family for tolerating 13 weeks of missed Sunday dinners. Love always to Joe, who makes me believe I can do anything, and to Maddie — Zio's favourite future leading lady.

David is thrilled to return for his third production with SMT, and his first on the creative side of the table. A graduate of the University of Windsor’s Musical Theatre program (many moons ago), David performed professionally for years before transitioning into a career as a project manager in the financial industry...quite the leap from dancing to deadlines!
He is so grateful to SMT for the opportunity to step back into a choreographer’s role, and to his brilliant creative partners, Jeremy (Director) and Tony (Music Director), for their collaboration and countless laughs along the way. He also extends heartfelt thanks to this incredible cast and production team for their talent, dedication, and spirit.
Up next, David will return to the stage in SMT’s annual Holiday Cabaret.
Thank you for supporting live theatre - enjoy the show!

This pantomime is the age-old story of the emperor who gets taken in by a fraudster who sells him a set of clothes that can “only be seen by those who are of high worth and intelligence”. Add in a hero who has a change of heart in order to win the girl of his dreams, a villain and his two imbecilic side-kicks, and of course, the pantomime horse and all the makings are there for a fun time. Cheer the hero, boo the villain, HAVE FUN!
