As a kid, I was obsessed with musical theatre. I loved it. The singing, the dancing and the absolute joy - yes please! I would sit for hours and watch movie musicals. Me and Goldie from PBS were very well acquainted.
As a teen, a stellar music teacher introduced us to Stephen Sondheim and it was love at first listen. His music spoke to me. His words moved me to tears or laughter and made me think. Maybe I couldn’t always hum the songs but they had a weight and gravitas that impacted me in a way that changed how I thought about musicals every day since.
When the opportunity came up to direct a Sondheim review I was excited. Even better this review includes videos of Sondheim discussing his work and his life that put the pieces into context and gives you some great insight into the man, the myth, the legend and his work. Perfection!
I’ve learned so much over the past months delving into this show. Not just about God … uh … Sondheim but also about passion. This group of people who are onstage today have put their heart and soul into the show and I couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved.
I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as we have enjoyed preparing them for you. And if you didn’t come in with a deep love and appreciation of this master of musical theatre then we hope you’ll leave with one.
Thank you for supporting community theatre.

Antony is the principal horn for the Oakville Wind Orchestra, and plays with Gayly Forward, Toronto's 2SLGBTQIA+ marching band. When not playing, Antony is the manager of corporate planning at Kensington Health - a not-for-profit health and long-term care centre in downtown Toronto. Thanks to Miguel and Alex for bringing him into SMT - and special thanks and congratulations to Miguel for pulling together and leading 17 performers through this beautiful and challenging score. Much love and gratitude to all of his loved ones who have come out to support!

I’ve been fortunate to work with Scarborough Music Theatre on many productions including Little Shop of Horrors, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Mamma Mia!, The Bridges of Madison County, Freaky Friday, and The Rocky Horror Show. It’s wonderful to get to work with the hugely talented cast, directors and production team of Sondheim On Sondheim!
This is Jennifer's SMT debut. We thank her for taking on the very challenging Synth role for one of our performances and a rehearsal.
It's a huge ask and she is amazing!
Thanks Jennifer!

The Birds and the Bees is a laugh-out-loud comedy with a huge, honeyed heart.
Gail, a beekeeper, concerned with her decreasing bee population, has little time for the woes of her daughter, Sarah, a turkey farmer who has just left her cheating husband, and even less time for her tenant farmer, Earl, who has a free-wheeling attitude toward sex and relationships. Add to this fractious mix Ben, a young, athletic university student also keen on understanding bee populations, and everyone is about to get a big lesson in pollination…if you know what we mean!

What do you do when you love your family but can’t help being embarrassed by them? The Sycamore family’s eccentric lifestyle is a testament to living life joyfully and on one’s own terms. However, when daughter Alice brings her fiancé’s, straight-laced family to dinner, hilarity ensues, leaving everyone questioning what it means to be normal and whether or not it’s worth it.
Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman’s classic comedy, You Can’t Take It With You has been charming audiences for decades with its story that celebrates life and the courage to embrace one’s individuality.
Recommended for age 10 and up.

Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Winner of three Tony Awards, including best musical, as well as the Pulitzer Prize, Rent shaped a generation of audiences and taught us all to measure our life in love.
Recommended for ages 17 and up
